House in hands framed by American Flag

The Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) states that veterans have the greatest need for housing as there are over 18,000 veterans in Virginia, an unknown amount of veterans, to include disabled that are homeless and in need of housing for the disabled. The problem today is the number of disabled veterans returning from the Iraq/Afghan war, and who have not been adequately advised on what is available to them. The Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing wants them to get the information before they become one of the growing numbers of veterans whose disability deteriorates as they get older, and live in housing that is not accessible for them, so they can remain INDEPENDENT as long as possible.

Our “One Stop Shop“, was developed to make all veterans as independent as possible by remodeling their present living space, or finding them a government grant to have a home built to their specific needs. Specially adapted housing grants can, and will, drastically reduce the cost of building a home.

The medical staff of their local Department of Veterans Affairs will also schedule a home visit to determine what medical equipment, if any, the VA can supply them material needed in home FREE OF COST to all eligible veterans.

All of our builders are approved by the Veterans Affair Special Adapted Housing Section, as an approved builder for Special Adapted Homes and knows all the proper building requirements that will be needed for a disabled veteran to have the home built to his/her specifications.

How the DVCH works

  1. Provide information for disabled veterans to help see if they qualify for a specially adapted home either built or remodeled
  2. Provide an informational session on the responsibilities of what the veteran will be required to do in our program
  3. Help veterans in all preparations of the paperwork that will be required including filling out the paperwork for veterans before they sign.
  4. Help them in the selection of land/lot for building their new home and prepare all documents
  5. Assist the veterans and their family meet with the builder to discuss with the veteran and his family all aspects of the style of home, including each and every room they will be utilizing for their medical needs.
  6. Assist in obtaining copies of documentation needed for their applications
  7. Assist with the final process of preparing for the closing of the land and the construction of the home
  8. Work with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Special Adapted Housing Branch to coordinate the paperwork to flow easier
  9. Final clarification of the materials picked out by veterans and their family in all aspects of the process

Our project team assists in taking loan applications,  and applying for government and other disability grants. Our staff meets directly with the client in their home or wherever is most convenient.

The builders will provide and offers a wide range of accessibility options.  If veterans don’t see any floor plans they like, they can bring a picture to the builder and they can design a floor plan to make their new homes 100% handicap accessible or simply make minor changes that will address mobility and access needs.
