The Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing (DVCH) & The Virginia Empolyment Commission (VEC) Reach Out To Help Homeless Veterans During the “Hero’s Haven” Homeless Veterans Stand Down

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA: (December 12, 2009) The Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing (DVCH) and the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), Winchester, Virginia participated in the “Hero’s Haven”, Homeless Veterans Stand Down organized by the Martinsburg, VA Medical Center. During the one day program the two organizations joined many other groups to assist our homeless veterans obtain the housing they both need and deserve.

The overall purpose of the “Stand Down” was to offer to eligible homeless veterans: medical screening, employment support and housing services. Its goal was also to involve homeless veterans in rehabilitative activities

John S. Lewandowski, DVCH President/CEO and Daphne R. Mize, Veterans Outreach Coordinator, Virginia Employment Commission represented their respective organization on December 12, 2009 where attendees gained access to a whole array of services during the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. sessions. John commented that “The Stand Down allowed more than 100(+) veterans to learn about the potential they have to obtain housing working with the different specialist “, who are on the DVCH staff – experts in finance, grants, real estate, construction, design, etc. Daphne commented that “All veterans need to come in and register for all that the program can offer such as job referrals, preparation of resumes, and much more”. The event was held at Veterans Administration Medical Center, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV 25405

Transportation:
Shuttle service will be arranged through the VAMC, Martinsburg. Most large missions/shelters within this patient service area will be stops on the route. Additionally stops will be made to several of the CBOCs. Specific routes with times and locations will be provided.

Services:
Health screening: Flu shots, blood pressure and weight, Hepatitis C and HIV screening and education, and physical exams.

Consultative services: Ophthalmology, Infectious Disease, Women’s Health, Audiology, and Dental Care.

Psycho-social referrals: Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans, Substance Abuse Treatment, PTSD and other Mental Health Services.

Housing Services:   Representation from Grant and Per Diem Transitional Housing, HUD-VASH, and local community housing.

Employment Support: Compensated Work Therapy, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Work Force of WV.

Other Services: Veteran Benefits Administration, Vet Centers, Veterans Service Organizations and AA and NA Meetings.

Clothing: Clean clothing items will be available.
